if you haven't heard, the box jelly neighbors are expanding their co-working space a tad further beyond our shared "door". it's something like a homecoming, after box jelly first opened as a popup in the back of fishcake in 2011.
The Box Jelly will be divided by Fishcake, a home furnishings store and gallery for designers, nestled right in the middle of Box Jelly’s offices. But the relationship between the two companies (Fishcake is owned by Fujihira’s mother Maura Fujihara) will allow for shared access to the space.
“You can freely flow between Fishcake and Box Jelly. It’s like a sister company, and they’re kind of like the yin to our yang. They provide that balance to what we’ve got going on here,” DiCarlo said.
lots of changes underway!

let there be light [+furniture]!
fish friends! we are happy to share with you our next art exhibit akari + kagu: let there be light [+furniture]. the show features akari (luminaries) and kagu (furniture) of 12 hawaii artists.
in previous years, akari + kagu developed as a close collaboration with the university of hawaii manoa through programs teaching furniture design and construction. in this year, we reach out to independent artists throughout hawaii with the same support to foster good quality craftsmanship.
it's going to be a good one (as always!)

we dream of flowers... and pigs too
wanna know what's dreamy? a library of flowers,an american small batch perfumery from colorado. known for her modern, luxurious, and romantic takes on innovative formulas and packaging, margot elena has created several lines (lollia, love and toast, tokyo milk) in addition to library of flowers, all with superb design. fishcake (one of a very few retailers!) carries artful and whimsical scents in three fragrances from ch.2 nectar + pollen: willow + water, true vanilla, and forget me not - which come in a handcreme, parfum crema, bubble or shower gel, and eau de parfum.
maybe more of a dreamer than dreamy, are our friends at the pig + the lady. a pop-up eatery specializing in vietnamese street-style food, the pig + the lady gained a large following from selling at farmers markets and popping-up at spaces like taste and honolulu night market. headed by chef and owner andrew le, the pig + the lady crew have so much heart for good food and good people. today, they are building a home - to be open five days a week for lunch/dinner -with 3,000 ft of beautiful square footage, within a historical building, and set in red-brick so familiar to chinatown/downtown, the means to make this dream a reality could use your help!
putting a modern twist on the traditional all while utilizing local, fishcake is grateful to work so closely with the pig + lady on their new and exciting endeavor! see you at the opening but first check here for their indie gogo campaign!

we hope you got your pix fix on last week! thank you to everyone who came out. it was a fun night and we got to meet a lot of new folks, all camera enthusiasts for sure. our tables (and then some) were deco'd for the night with film cameras, lenses, prints -the list goes on.
a special thanks to shuzo uemoto for a generous donation of a 16mm keystone mayfair + a 35mm ricoh rangefinder. two lucky winners went home happy. also to bobby asato (and family) of treehouse and our friends over at art + flea.

a morphing fish
squatter alert: Hound & Quail, a collection of curiosities |
friends of fishcake know, our space is constantly changing, if not daily! its a good way to keep things fresh. our metamorphosis as of late, has kept us busy in every corner of the room. namely, fishcake squatters Hound & Quail, Vintage Rose, and P55dle have moved. not to fret, they're not leaving! they are in fact, the first to greet folks thru the door. such a visual treat, come and see the new.
and in place of what was? oh, we can't say just yet. but more changes are on the way...
speaking of visual treats and new in the mix - our latest art exhibition IMMIX goes up on the walls next thursday august 22 featuring local-based photographers mark abeit, justin davies, and ivan wentland. what is immix, you ask? pronounced ih-miks, it is an experiment in the act of change itself - to mingle and manipulate. with every "mix in" of a new element, a new physical make-up is born. each of the photographers have gone beyond traditional photography to produce images which test techniques unique to them. think: life-sized photograms, scorched polaroids, and altered landscapes. join us!
